Medicine Categories
All drugs are divided into two parts: Aga marunthu (drugs to be taken orally) and Pura marunthu (drugs for external use)
Internal Medicines
Aga Marunthu - Drugs to be taken orally
These are drugs to be taken orally for internal healing and treatment of diseases.
Juice (Chaaru)
Root, bark, stem, leaves, flour, green fruit, one of which is pounded and juice extracted.
Essence (Saaram/Rasam)
Ingredients pounded, powdered or made as paste and juice mixture boiled and essence taken.
Decoction (Kizhayam)
Medicinal products powdered, mixed with water and boiled, juice taken as kizhayam.
Karkam (Kalkam)
Wet/dry herbal products pounded in stone-grinder mortar to paste mixed with iron powder or rust.
Pudding (Ulkali)
Drug inside like jam and outside dry. Rice and black gram dhall etc., powdered, mixed with water and sweet liquid, cooked with ghee.
Cakes (Adai)
Rice flour mixed with water, greens and coriander, poured on iron pan as cake and taken after cooking.
Powder (Chooranam)
Ingredients powdered, mixed, those that are oily peeled and ground to grease form.
Pudding (Pittu)
Medicinal ingredients pounded, powdered, mixed with cow's milk and cooked by steam like pudding.
Vadagam
Medicinal ingredients powdered, sieved, mixed with water, gur or sugar and made as pittu, then made as round pills and dried.
Butter
Drugs powdered, sieved, mixed with cow's ghee, churned with wooden stick to collect the ghee.
Syrup (Manappagu)
Juice of root, flower, fruit or creeper mixed with sugar candy or gur, boiled with medicinal powders to syrup consistency.
Suraippu Powder
Made with medicinal articles and mixed with ghee or sugar as paste.
Naigritham
Juice of green herbal leaves or tubers mixed with cow's ghee and boiled to ghee consistency.
Confection (Ilagam)
Sugar or palmgur melted with water, mixed with cow's milk, honey, medicinal powders and ghee.
Thailam (Oil)
Medicinal articles prepared and mixed with boiling oil based on drugs mixed.
Medicated Ghee
Five types: Mudi Nei (scalp), Kudi Nei (drinking), Pidi Nei (body), Thulai Nei (nine holes), Silai Nei (wounds).
Tablets (Mathirai)
Specified medicines mixed with required juice, ground paste shaped like tablets, dried and kept.
Kadugu
Required drugs boiled in ghee, boiled sediment taken as medicine and oily ghee smeared on patient.
Pakkuvam
Ingredients soaked in water or raw rice water, mixed with buttermilk, ginger juice, lemon juice and medicinal powders.
Soaked in Honey (Thenooral)
Drugs like ginger, amlaka fruit soaked in water, picked with needle and soaked in sugar syrup or honey.
Thee Neer
Drugs kept in vessel half filled with water and boiled. The boiled water is called Thee Neer.
Wax (Mezhugu)
Two types: Araippu Mezhugu (essence or salts mixed in honey/milk) and Surukku Mezhugu (filtered from pouch).
Paste (Kuzhambu)
Medicinal juices stirred on oven with sugar, ground and sieved drugs smeared and boiled goose-berry like mixture.
Pathanagam
Salt, burnt brick powder and saw dust mixed with mercury in earthen pot, covered and sealed, burnt regularly.
Chendooram
Drugs like paadaanams and metals ground in herbal juice, salt, slaked in cow-dung cakes or fried or dried or burnt.
Neeru (Parpam)
Paadaanams, minerals and metals mixed with herbal juice, ground, puffed out or fried, taken as white ash-like substance.
Kattu
Paadaanams mixed with medicinal articles, stirred like juice, mixed with various ingredients and tied in cloth pouch.
Urukku
Paadaanams or metals tied in cloth pouch, kept in pot with water, sealed, heated and melted medicines taken.
Kalangu
Mercury and medicinal substances slaked with cow-dung cakes, puffed as gem, melted in gold and Naagam.
Chunnam
Mercury and Paadaanam ground in Saineer, Pugaineer and herbal juice, made like tablets, dried, soaked and puffed.
Karkam
Medicinal substances administered to patient with required doses and diet restrictions for disease treatment.
Rasa Mani
Substances like mercury mixed with certain herbal juices and converted as beads (mani).
